Despite recent backlash, Van Morrison pushed through and released his controversial song “Born to be Free.” The lyrics reflect his feelings and complaints against ongoing government restrictions regarding concerts as there’s still no end in sight for the coronavirus pandemic.

This is the first installment in a series of tracks he calls “protest songs against lockdown”.

He sings “Don’t need the government cramping my style” and “Give them an inch/They take a mile.” Then his chorus goes, “The new normal is not normal / It’s no kind of normal at all / Everyone seemed to have amnesia just trying to remember the Berlin Wall.”

Morrison complaining through his music is nothing new and since 2019, he’s been very vocal about his dissatisfaction and disillusionment with the government. During the COVID-19 lockdown, he’s been calling on his fellow musicians to speak up against the restrictions.

He previously announced that the profits from digital downloads will be donated via his Van Morrison Official Belfast Rhythm and Blues Foundation to musicians who are currently financially struggling because of the global health crisis.

He said when he announced the singles, “I’m not telling people what to do or think, the government is doing a great job of that already. It’s about freedom of choice. I believe people should have the right to think for themselves.”

Fans and other artists have expressed their disappointment over Van Morrison.
