An Underrated Artist

Stephen Stills, despite his contributions to rock ‘n roll, is unfairly overlooked. He was a member of two successful bands – Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Neil Young himself called Stills “a genius.” After the groups disbanded, Stills pursued a solo career. And being a prolific songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, it’s no surprise that he churned out several musical gems.

Check out the five most loved songs in his canon.

5. “Treetop Flyer”

It’s from his 1991 album “Stills Alone” where most of the tracks had little or no backing. American singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne admitted in an interview that it’s this song which convinced him to pursue a career in music.

4. “Marianne”

One of the two singles released for “Stephen Stills 2”, it only peaked at #42 but it’s definitely one of his most beautiful compositions.

3. “Sit Yourself Down”

This gospel-based melody was inspired by his then-new romance with Rita Coolidge. Aside from Coolidge, others who provided backing vocals include Graham Nash, David Crosby, John Sebastian and Cass Elliott.

2. “It Doesn’t Matter”

A catchy and infectious tune, it’s featured on the highly successful “Manassas” album which received gold certification just a month after its release.

1. “Love The One You’re With”

It’s the lead single from his self-titled debut studio album and it has been covered a couple of times – the most notable version is that from The Isley Brothers. John Sebastian, Rita Coolidge, Priscilla Jones, David Crosby and Graham Nash did the backing vocals.
