Iconic Prog Rockers Pink Floyd Unveil New ‘8-Tracks’ Compilation

Pink Floyd

In the decade between 1971 and 1979, Pink Floyd transformed from a band exploring psychedelic soundscapes into one of rock music’s most ambitious and influential acts. To capture that evolution, the group is releasing 8‑Tracks, a new compilation set for June 5 through Sony Music on vinyl, CD, and digital platforms. The collection gathers eight songs that exemplify the band’s growth during those years, pairing familiar hits with a rare extended version of a track that had long eluded listeners.

The era covered by 8‑Tracks includes the albums that defined Pink Floyd’s signature style. Selections from Meddle, The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall anchor the compilation, highlighting the group’s ability to combine progressive rock arrangements with reflective lyrics. Additional songs from Obscured By Clouds and Animals illustrate the experimental range the band explored, demonstrating both ambition and diversity in their work.

Celebrated Hits and a Rare Gem

Listeners will find timeless tracks such as “Money,” “Wish You Were Here,” “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2,” “Time,” and “Comfortably Numb” included. These songs helped cement the band’s identity, balancing intricate instrumentation with lyrical depth, and remain central to Pink Floyd’s legacy decades later.

A standout addition is the full-length version of “Pigs on the Wing” from Animals, which previously existed only on original eight-track cartridges. This version merges two parts of the song with extra guitar work, offering a continuity that many fans had sought for years. By including this rare rendition, the compilation bridges historical recordings with a modern listening experience.

Crafted for Continuous Flow

Steven Wilson, producer and musician, arranged the track sequence to create seamless transitions from start to finish. By incorporating original multitrack sound effects, Wilson allowed each song to flow naturally into the next, replicating the sensation of experiencing a complete album rather than a selection of separate singles. This approach emphasizes Pink Floyd’s meticulous attention to atmosphere and progression, qualities that defined their 1970s output.

The eight-song format also reflects the band’s artistic development during that period, when they moved from early psychedelia toward structured, ambitious compositions that resonated worldwide. 8‑Tracks offers a condensed view of these years, serving both as a gateway for new listeners and a renewed experience for longtime fans eager to revisit the era that solidified Pink Floyd’s reputation.
