Jon Bon Jovi, renowned singer and frontman of the iconic rock band Bon Jovi, recently opened up about a vocal injury that left him questioning why his ability was taken away. During a panel discussion titled “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story” at the Television Critics Association, Jon Bon Jovi shared his journey of dealing with the injury and the impact it had on his craft.

From Pride to Perplexity and Recovery

A true vocalist with a rich musical history, Jon Bon Jovi expressed his pride in his singing abilities. He highlighted his extensive experience, including performing alongside opera legend Luciano Pavarotti, and emphasized that his vocal technique was built upon years of study. However, when faced with the loss of his vocal ability, Jon Bon Jovi couldn’t fathom the reason behind it.

In a lighthearted manner, he humorously remarked,

“I pride myself on being a true vocalist. I’ve sung with Pavarotti. I know how to sing. I’ve studied the craft for 40 years. I’m not a stylist who just barks and howls. I know how to sing.

” So when God was taking away my ability, and I couldn’t understand why, I jokingly said the only thing that’s ever been up my nose is my finger. So there was no reason for this. […]

“One of my cords was literally atrophied. So my vocal cords, they’re supposed to look parallel. So let’s pretend one of them looks as thick as my thumb and the other one is as thick as a pinky.

”So the strong one was pushing the weak one aside. And I wasn’t singing well. So my craft was being taken from me.

“Fortunately, I found a surgeon who was able to do this really cutting-edge implant to build the cord back up. It’s still in the process.”

A Threat to His Craft and Passion

With the stronger cord pushing the weaker one aside, Jon Bon Jovi found himself unable to sing at his usual level of proficiency. The injury posed a major threat to his craft and passion. Faced with this challenging situation, he sought out a skilled surgeon who offered a cutting-edge solution—a specialized implant capable of rebuilding the weakened vocal cord.

Grateful for finding this groundbreaking option, Jon Bon Jovi shared that the recovery process was still ongoing. The intricate procedure aimed to restore the balance and functionality of his vocal cords. While the road to recovery presented its own set of challenges, Jon Bon Jovi remained optimistic about the future of his voice and his ability to continue performing.
