Beach Boys Legend Bruce Johnston Announces His Retirement

After more than sixty years on the road, Bruce Johnston is stepping back from touring with The Beach Boys—at least for the foreseeable future. The 83-year-old musician announced the decision in a statement to Rolling Stone, explaining that he is ready to turn his attention toward a new phase of his musical life.

While Johnston isn’t retiring from music entirely, the move marks a significant shift for a performer who has spent decades as one of the most recognizable fixtures in the Beach Boys’ touring lineup.

A New Chapter Focused on Songwriting

For Johnston, stepping away from the road is less about slowing down and more about redirecting his creative energy. The veteran musician said he now wants to focus primarily on songwriting, something he considers one of his strongest talents.

“It’s time for Part Three of my lengthy musical career!” Johnston said. “I can write songs forever, and wait until you hear what’s coming!!! As my major talent beyond singing is songwriting, now is the time to get serious again.”

Throughout his career, Johnston has contributed significantly to the Beach Boys’ catalog, penning songs that helped shape the band’s melodic, harmony-rich identity. By shifting his focus back to writing, he appears eager to revisit the craft that helped cement his reputation within one of rock’s most influential groups.

From Brian Wilson’s Stand-In to Touring Mainstay

Johnston’s connection with the band stretches back to 1965, when he stepped in for co-founder Brian Wilson during live performances. Wilson had chosen to remain in the studio to focus on writing and producing, opening the door for Johnston to join the touring lineup.

Over the years, Johnston became a dependable presence onstage, performing alongside generations of Beach Boys members and helping keep the band’s classic sound alive for audiences around the world.

Even as he eases away from the touring circuit, Johnston is still planning to remain active. He revealed that he intends to explore speaking engagements as well, with longtime friend and occasional Beach Boys collaborator John Stamos helping him develop material for those appearances.

“I might even sing ‘Disney Girls’ & ‘I Write The Songs!!'” he teased.

Not a Farewell, Just a Step Back

Despite the announcement, Johnston made it clear that fans shouldn’t interpret his decision as a complete goodbye. He confirmed that he still plans to reunite with the band for special occasions, including their July 2–4 performances at the Hollywood Bowl during the group’s 2026 tour.

Those shows will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Beach Boys’ landmark album Pet Sounds while also coinciding with festivities marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.

“This isn’t goodbye, it’s see you soon,” Johnston wrote. “I am forever grateful to be a part of the Beach Boys musical legacy.”

For fans who have watched Johnston help carry the Beach Boys’ harmonies across generations, the statement feels less like a farewell and more like a natural transition. After decades of touring, his voice—and perhaps even more importantly, his songwriting—may still have plenty left to add to the enduring story of the Beach Boys.
