Ann Wilson Reveals Her Favorite Heart Song And Its Story

It All Began Simply
Ann Wilson recently sat down for an interview with Professor of Rock and discussed one of her favorite Heart songs. It’s the title track to the band’s fourth studio album, Dog & Butterfly, which they released in January 1979.
Wilson looked back at how they came up with it.
“It started really simply, of course, with just me seeing a sight, which somehow sometimes that’s how I get an idea for a song,” she recalled. “I just see something and it goes, ‘Hey’. And in this case, I was looking out the window in my music room one day, and my dog was chasing butterflies. Never gonna catch these things, never ever, but my dog showed this sense of purpose and playfulness.”
“She went after and after and after and wouldn’t stop,” she continued. “And it didn’t take long for me to go all metaphoric with it, you know.”

Dog & Butterfly was the album’s second single. It was a departure from their previous hard rock-oriented hits and instead, Heart leaned towards their folk music influences. It didn’t crack the top 20 and only peaked at #34 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Its message remains inspiring.
