The entire world of rock ‘n roll was shocked when news of Eddie Van Halen’s death broke out. He’s had health issues for years but on October 6, 2020, he succumbed to his lengthy battle with cancer. As a tribute to one of the greatest and most innovative guitar players, former Van Halen singer Sammy Haggar sat down for an interview with Professor of Rock and broke down five of Van Halen’s best songs from both the eras of Hagar and David Lee Roth.
Van Halen had a stunning debut and it was rather controversial when Diamond Dave left the group and they brought Hagar onboard. It’s a divisive question among Van Halen fans as to which era is better but we’re not delving into that topic right now. Instead, Hagar gave commentary on their top five tracks.
“We knew we were gonna be a band,” Hagar recalled. “And we were gonna make the announcement. Eddie calls me first night [at] four o’clock in the morning. I’m going, ‘Well, it must be an emergency.’ He goes, ‘Listen, listen.’ He has an electric guitar with no amp, and he starts playing. I’m listening, I’m going, ‘Wow. Wow.'”
