Paul McCartney has officially unveiled his 27th studio album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, a title steeped in personal history. The phrase points to a winding road near his childhood home, a path that once led a young, bird-watching McCartney toward the banks of the River Mersey.

Produced by Andrew Watt, the album is scheduled for release on May 29, with preorders already available. Alongside the announcement, McCartney introduced the reflective lead single, “Days We Left Behind,” offering listeners an early glimpse into the project’s nostalgic tone.

“This is very much a memory song for me,” McCartney said in an official statement. “The album title, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, comes from a lyric in this track. I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think how can you write about anything else?”

A Long-Standing Reference Resurfaces

The phrase “boys of Dungeon Lane” is not new to McCartney’s catalog. It first appeared in “In Liverpool,” one of roughly 25 demos considered for his 1993 album Off the Ground. Producer Julian Mendelsohn ultimately passed on the track, which featured the evocative line: “Walking with the boys of Dungeon Lane, aimlessly towards a muddy shore.”

McCartney revisited both the song and its imagery during the 2008 Liverpool Sound concert at Anfield Stadium. Reflecting on his upbringing, he later noted in Barry Miles’ biography Many Years From Now:

“This is where my love of the country came from. I was always able to take my bike and in five minutes I’d be in quite deep countryside.”

His latest release follows nearly six years after 2020’s McCartney III, which achieved international Top 5 success. Around the time of the announcement, McCartney was also preparing for a pair of intimate performances at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles.

Early Clues and Family Connections

Hints about The Boys of Dungeon Lane surfaced ahead of the official reveal. McCartney’s brother, Mike McCartney, confirmed the album title early on and shared that his son Josh—McCartney’s nephew—was responsible for the album’s visual design.

Meanwhile, a dedicated website had already been launched, accompanied by teaser posters bearing the album title and the marking “L24.” The postcode refers to Speke, the Liverpool district where McCartney grew up and where Dungeon Lane is located.

Images of these posters appeared both on Mike McCartney’s social media and on a commemorative page for former Wings guitarist Jimmy McCulloch. Notably, the website itself had been registered as early as November, signaling a carefully orchestrated rollout.

Across his career, McCartney has released 19 rock and pop solo albums, alongside additional work credited to Wings and collaborations with his late wife, Linda McCartney. Today, Dungeon Lane leads toward Liverpool John Lennon Airport, with George Harrison’s childhood home once situated nearby—further underscoring the deep personal and cultural roots behind the album’s title.
