New Van Halen Album Coming With Robert Plant on Vocals? Alex Van Halen Says Eddie and Wolf Already Recorded Parts
Society of Rock
Alex Van Halen has revealed new details about possible unreleased music from Van Halen. In a recent interview with Gastão Moreira of Brazil’s Kazagastão, the drummer confirmed that guitarist Steve Lukather is helping him sort through recordings made by Eddie Van Halen, Alex, and Wolfgang Van Halen. The material, he explained, was meant for what would have been the band’s next studio album.
Fans have long asked whether unheard songs would ever be released. Alex addressed those questions directly. He made clear that the band does not want to share unfinished work simply to satisfy curiosity. Instead, he said the music must meet the same standard the group always demanded of itself before it reaches the public.

Recordings Left Incomplete
Alex explained that the tracks were not demos thrown together for fun. They were serious recordings built for a full album project. “Many people have asked, what about releasing unreleased stuff?’ Well, we’re not gonna release it in its embryonic form because it wouldn’t make any sense. It has to be of the quality and the level of where we left it. Not just to say, ‘Hey, here’s some music that we made. If you like it, that’s great.’ No, It has to be the quality that we expect.”
He went on to describe how far along the sessions had progressed before Eddie’s death in 2020. “These were recordings that were going to be the next record, and that were stopped because [Eddie] didn’t live that long. The drums are already recorded. The drums, the guitar and the bass are already in there.” He confirmed that Wolfgang Van Halen played bass on those tracks.
Searching for the Right Voice
While much of the instrumentation is complete, the question of vocals remains open. Alex said he is not looking to revisit earlier singers from the band’s history, including David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, or Gary Cherone. Instead, he appears interested in finding a different voice to bring new life to the recordings.
He mentioned that he would have liked to hear someone like Robert Plant or Paul Rodgers front the material. However, no singer has been selected. Alex and Lukather are still reviewing the recordings and discussing how to move forward. For now, the focus is on shaping the music into something that reflects the spirit and sound the band maintained during its final years.
