New Details Reveal Journey Singer Nearly Dropped Out of Farewell Tour Plans

Journey frontman Arnel Pineda has revealed that he seriously considered stepping away from the band’s recently launched farewell tour, citing personal struggles and vocal concerns that made continuing difficult. In a conversation with Rolling Stone, the singer shared that he attempted to withdraw from the tour several times before ultimately remaining with the group.

Pineda explained that his concerns began building in 2024 as both professional and personal pressures intensified. The singer said he wanted clarity from the band about future plans while managing issues affecting his health and private life. “Back in 2024, I said to [the band], ‘If you’re planning to do a farewell tour, you better tell me, because my issues and my personal problems are getting more intense, and I don’t know if I want to go with you,’” Pineda explained. “I said, ‘I want you to discuss the schedule with me.’ It is what it is now…. But then, I was really not happy with how they scheduled this tour. My body has changed. I can’t take the cold weather anymore.”

Personal Struggles and Vocal Challenges

According to Pineda, two major factors drove his hesitation: ongoing vocal difficulties and a difficult divorce that included allegations of domestic abuse. The singer has faced vocal strain in recent years, and colder climates during touring have made performing more challenging. He said he reached out to his bandmates through email to express concerns about the demanding schedule.

Pineda noted that his attempts to communicate were met with silence, leaving him unsure about how the band viewed his situation. He said he even tried to formally step away from Journey but received no response. “As they say, silence can be louder than explaining,” the frontman remarked. “I said to them I wanted to retire because of my personal problems. No answer. Obviously, they don’t want to find another singer.”

Moving Forward With the Farewell Tour

Despite these challenges, Pineda confirmed that he remains the band’s lead vocalist as Journey continues its farewell run. The tour began in March and is expected to continue through 2027, marking what the group has described as a closing chapter after decades of touring and recording.

During the interview, Pineda said much of his uncertainty came from emotional stress connected to his divorce and family responsibilities. He emphasized that his desire to step back was not rooted in dissatisfaction with the band itself but in the personal toll he was experiencing. “My personal problem really took a toll on me,” he explained. “That’s why I wanted to prioritize my family. It’s not that I hate touring with [Journey]. It’s like the same thing that happened with Steve Perry. He has a hip problem. Me, I have a personal problem that’s taking a toll on me. It’s getting in my head, emotionally. I told them that I was a wreck and needed a little more time so that I could fix my family. But I still have to do this.”

Pineda’s comments offer a rare look into the pressures faced by touring musicians balancing demanding schedules with personal struggles behind the scenes.
