A Musical Innovator and Founding Member
On April 24, 2024, Mike Pinder, keyboardist and founding member of The Moody Blues, passed away peacefully at his home in Northern California at the age of 82. Born in Birmingham, England, in 1941, Pinder co-founded The Moody Blues in 1964. The band achieved notable success with ten UK Top 40 hits and thirteen in the U.S., including “Nights in White Satin” and “Tuesday Afternoon.”
Pinder was instrumental in shaping the band’s sound through his innovative use of the Mellotron, an early keyboard instrument that used tape loops to produce orchestral sounds. His expertise with the Mellotron, developed during his time as an engineer at Streetly Electronics, gave The Moody Blues their distinctive symphonic style. This sound became a hallmark of their music and influenced many progressive rock bands that followed.
