John Mellencamp Blasts the Grammys — And He’s Not Holding Back

John Mellencamp has never hidden his skepticism toward industry accolades, and he recently made it clear that music’s most famous awards hold no value for him.

Appearing on Club Random with host Bill Maher, the veteran rocker dismissed the prestige surrounding the Grammy Awards. Mellencamp said he has never attended the ceremony and sees no reason to start now, bluntly stating that honors like the Grammys—or even the Golden Globes—are meaningless in his eyes.

While he expressed open disdain for the awards themselves, Mellencamp drew a distinction when it came to the Grammy Museum, noting that he respects the institution and its role in preserving music history. Still, that appreciation doesn’t translate into any personal interest in trophies or televised ceremonies.

A Complicated Grammy Record

Over the course of his long career, John Mellencamp has earned 14 Grammy nominations, but only one win. In 1983, his hit single “Hurts So Good” took home the award for Best Male Rock Performer. Despite that recognition, Mellencamp has never performed during the Grammy Awards broadcast itself.

He has, however, appeared at related events. In 2025, he participated in a Grammy Hall of Fame Gala, where he helped honor Republic Records. A decade earlier, in 2015, he also performed at the annual MusiCares Person of the Year gala, which that year celebrated Bob Dylan.

More recently, Mellencamp took the stage at a pre-Grammy party in 2026 hosted by Primary Wave Music, underscoring his willingness to engage with the industry—just not its awards.

Looking Ahead

Mellencamp is set to embark on a wide-ranging U.S. tour this summer. He has promised fans a hit-filled setlist, including several songs he has deliberately left out of his live shows for years, signaling that while awards may not matter to him, the music and the audience still do.
