More than three decades after it first surfaced, one of the most persistent inside jokes in Guns N’ Roses lore has found new life—this time as official merchandise. Guitarist Richard Fortus has introduced a shirt emblazoned with the phrase “I Don’t Know Where Izzy Is,” a playful nod to the long-running fan chant rooted in the band’s early ‘90s era.
The design, released via Agent Royale, features Fortus’ signature logo alongside the tongue-in-cheek slogan. On April 9, the guitarist shared a preview of the shirt on his Instagram Story, directing fans to where it could be purchased. The move signals not just a sense of humor, but an awareness of the band’s deep-cut mythology—one that continues to resonate with audiences decades later.
The Origin of “Where’s Izzy?”
The phrase traces back to 1991, during the release of the “Don’t Cry” music video from Use Your Illusion I. In a fleeting yet memorable moment, a sign appears on screen reading “Where’s Izzy?”—a reference to founding guitarist Izzy Stradlin, who was notably absent from the shoot.
Within weeks, Stradlin officially departed the band, giving the question an unintended permanence. Over time, “Where’s Izzy?” evolved into a fan-driven phenomenon, shouted at concerts and immortalized on homemade signs held high in crowds. The humor, tinged with nostalgia, has endured as a symbol of the band’s turbulent history.
Legacy, Lineups, and Lingering Questions
Fortus, who joined Guns N’ Roses in 2002, now stands as one of the group’s longest-tenured members, alongside frontman Axl Rose and keyboardist Dizzy Reed. His decision to embrace the meme underscores his place within the band’s evolving narrative—one that bridges its classic era with its modern incarnation.
Speculation about a full reunion of the Appetite for Destruction lineup intensified in 2016 when Slash and Duff McKagan rejoined the fold. Many fans hoped that Stradlin and drummer Steven Adler would follow. However, those expectations ultimately went unmet. In a since-deleted statement, Stradlin reportedly claimed the band “didn’t want to split the loot equally,” hinting at the financial tensions behind the scenes.
Today, Stradlin remains an elusive figure. His last known contribution—a guest appearance on John Mellencamp’s “Grandview”—only adds to his mystique. While the question “Where’s Izzy?” may never receive a definitive answer, Fortus’ latest release proves that, for fans, the mystery is part of the legend.
