Beach Boys Ready to Hit the Road Again

The Beach Boys are entering a new chapter as they prepare to launch their first world tour following the departure of longtime member Bruce Johnston, whose six-decade tenure quietly shaped the group’s enduring sound. The upcoming run signals both continuity and change—an evolution for a band whose legacy is deeply tied to its classic lineup.
A Global Return Without a Familiar Voice
The tour begins in early May in the United States, opening in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, before moving across key venues including Wolf Trap in Virginia and the Ryman Auditorium. A multi-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl is expected to be among the defining moments of the tour, especially with its proximity to the Fourth of July holiday.
From there, the band will cross the Atlantic for dates in the U.K., including an appearance at the Southampton Summer Sessions, before returning to North America for additional shows in Canada and the U.S. The scale of the itinerary marks a notable expansion from earlier in the year, when only a handful of summer concerts—primarily in the U.K.—had been confirmed.
Johnston’s Exit and Lingering Presence
Although Johnston has stepped away from full-time touring, his connection to the band remains intact. He is expected to appear as a guest during select performances, including the Hollywood Bowl shows. Johnston first joined the group in 1965, initially stepping in for Brian Wilson before becoming a permanent fixture, contributing vocals, songwriting, and production across decades of recordings.
With his departure, Mike Love now stands as the only core-era member still touring under the Beach Boys banner. Meanwhile, former bandmate Al Jardine continues to perform independently with his Pet Sounds Band, preserving another thread of the group’s musical lineage outside the official touring unit.
Legacy, Catalog, and the Weight of Nostalgia
Johnston’s contributions remain embedded in the band’s most celebrated material, from his backing vocals on “California Girls” to his co-lead performance on “God Only Knows,” as well as his own composition, “Disney Girls (1957).” He also played a key role in shaping later works, including co-producing 1977’s L.A. (Light Album).
The Beach Boys have not released a studio album of new material since 2012’s That’s Why God Made the Radio, yet their presence remains remarkably visible through an expansive archival campaign. The latest installment, We Gotta Groove: The Brother Studio Years, revisits the band’s late-1970s period with a three-disc deep dive into sessions surrounding 15 Big Ones and The Beach Boys Love You.
More than a simple retrospective, these releases underscore the group’s ongoing relevance in an era where legacy acts often rely on nostalgia alone. By continuously recontextualizing their catalog, the Beach Boys reinforce their place not just as a touring act, but as a living archive of American pop history—one that continues to resonate with both longtime listeners and new generations discovering the band’s layered harmonies and studio innovations for the first time.
