Francis Buchholz, best known as the former bassist of Scorpions and a later member of Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock, has passed away at the age of 71.

His family confirmed the news on Friday, January 23, through a statement shared on his official Facebook page. They revealed that Buchholz died peacefully following a private battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones. The family expressed deep grief over the loss, noting that they stood together throughout his illness as he had always taught them to do. They also extended heartfelt thanks to fans worldwide for their loyalty and support, saying that while his instrument has fallen silent, his spirit lives on through his music and the many lives he influenced.

The Life and Career of Francis Buchholz

Born on February 19, 1954, in Hanover, West Germany, Buchholz discovered music at age 11 and made his first public performance by the time he was 15. While attending college, he joined the band Dawn Road alongside guitarist Uli Jon Roth. That group eventually merged with members of Scorpions, forming one of the earliest versions of the band.

Buchholz made his recording debut with Scorpions on their 1974 album Fly to the Rainbow. Over the next several years, he became a core member of the group, appearing on 12 albums, including the acclaimed live releases Tokyo Tapes (1978) and World Wide Live (1985). His tenure with the band concluded after the release of their hugely successful 1990 album Crazy World.

Reflecting on his proudest moment with Scorpions, Buchholz once recalled the significance of performing in Moscow during the Peace Festival in the early 1990s. Growing up in Cold War–era Germany, he remembered living in fear of conflict between East and West. Being invited to the Kremlin and meeting then–Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev marked a powerful personal milestone, symbolizing what the band had achieved simply by following their passion for music.

Life Beyond Scorpions

After leaving Scorpions, Buchholz stepped away from touring for a time to focus on family life. He later returned to music, touring with Uli Jon Roth in the mid-2000s and reuniting with Michael Schenker for the Temple of Rock Lovedrive reunion tour in 2012. He went on to record with the band in 2013 and also contributed to projects with Dreamtide and Phantom 5.

Outside of performing, Buchholz was an entrepreneur and innovator. He founded a PA and stage lighting rental company, developed and distributed advanced loudspeaker cabinets, authored the book Bass Magic, and worked as both a record producer and music consultant.

Scorpions Pay Tribute

They honored his lasting contribution to the band, remembered the many moments they shared together, and offered their sympathies to his family and loved ones, signing the message with a simple and heartfelt farewell.
