Geddy Lee Hints New Rush Music Could Happen “Eventually”
More than five decades into their career, Rush continues to resist the idea of final chapters. Bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee has hinted that new music could emerge once the band completes its expansive Fifty Something Tour, a run of more than 50 dates celebrating the group’s towering legacy.
Speaking to Music Radar (via Blabbermouth), Lee explained that his creative intentions predated the tour itself. “My intent, before we got into this celebration of Rush’s history, was to put some music together,” he said. While Lee initially assumed he would be working alone, rehearsals with longtime bandmate Alex Lifeson opened the door to new possibilities. “When we started jamming, I started seeing the possibility of doing something with Alex,” Lee noted—though the realities of preparing such a massive tour quickly took precedence.
Filling the Unfillable Seat
For the upcoming dates, Lee and Lifeson have enlisted German drummer, composer, and producer Anika Nilles, a technically dazzling and musically adventurous player tasked with navigating material originally shaped by the late Neil Peart. Peart, who passed away in 2020 at age 67 following a battle with glioblastoma, was not only Rush’s rhythmic engine but also its primary lyricist—an irreplaceable creative force.
Lee acknowledges the weight of that history while remaining open-minded about the future. “It would be fun to see what she can do in a creative situation,” he said of Nilles. “Like, that would be fun. But it’s all speculation until it isn’t.”
Survival, Rest, and What Comes After
At 72, Lee approaches the band’s next steps with a mix of humor and realism. “There’s too much work to do for this tour to even think about that,” he admitted. “But if we manage to survive the tour, and go back to Canada and have a rest, who knows what’ll happen, but I suspect some music will eventually come out.”
That sentiment reflects Rush’s long-standing ethos: progress without pressure. The Fifty Something Tour, which kicks off in Los Angeles this June, is not framed as a farewell but as a celebration—one that honors the past without sealing off the future. Whether new recordings ultimately take shape or not, Lee’s words suggest that Rush’s creative instincts remain intact. For a band built on curiosity, complexity, and evolution, the idea of standing still has never felt natural.
