Rock World Mourns a Guitar Icon

On Thursday, October 16, the rock world was shaken by news that original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley had died at age 74 in Morristown, New Jersey. Frehley was a founding sound of the band, serving as KISS’ lead guitarist from 1973 to 1982, and again during reunion years from 1996 to 2002.

Fans and musicians quickly shared tributes, noting how his style shaped hard rock guitar for decades. Frehley’s mix of melody, power, and space-inspired flair helped define KISS at its peak and left a deep mark on the genre.

Kulick Reflects on Frehley’s Influence

Former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick spoke with Guitar World about the challenge of following Frehley in the band. Kulick spent twelve years honoring Frehley’s style while adding his own voice, often reflecting on why Frehley’s playing reached so many listeners.

“I admired his vocabulary of riffs. It blended with KISS songs. Every solo became a song within the song. I always strive for that approach, too. Ace influenced so many guitarists, and I wanted to learn what it was about his playing that connected with them. He made me think of a primal Jimmy Page style of playing. I remember thinking, ‘This is like Eddie Van Halen’s death.’ He influenced so many, and he was one of a kind. His legacy is monumental.”

A Personal Tribute Shared

Following Frehley’s death, Kulick shared a personal message reflecting on their shared history. He spoke about gathering memories and photos from moments they spent together both onstage and behind the scenes.

“With everyone still feeling the impact of the sudden death of Ace Frehley, I started collecting all the photos and memories of the times we worked together or met. Here’s a photo of us from Creatures Fest, in 2022. We were backstage just prior to our “Unholy Trinity” performance with Vinnie. The camaraderie we shared in wanting to give the fans our best, I will never forget. RIP Ace.”

More Words of Remembrance

Two days later, on Saturday, October 18, Kulick shared a tribute video highlighting Frehley’s career and life. He noted how the loss spread quickly through the music world.

“Ace’s passing has reverberated the rock world like a tsunami. Here’s a video that has the highlights of his career and life.”

Final Public Statement

Kulick also addressed the news on October 16, shortly after learning of Frehley’s death. His message focused on Frehley’s lasting role in rock music and the bond fans felt with him.

“The news of Ace’s passing is devastating to the world of rock. It has deeply affected me as well. He was one of a kind, and truly an iconic guitar player. His undeniable role in the creation and success of KISS cannot be forgotten. Not only was he loved by all, he influenced millions of guitarists around the world. RIP.”
