Neil Diamond isn’t just a great singer. He’s also a talented songwriter. For me, he doesn’t just write the songs. Instead, he tells you a story — sometimes it’s his, other times it’s inspired by other people. Either way, his storytelling and melodies are THE perfect match. In this particular track, he talks about famous personalities who have already passed including Jesus Christ, Mozart and Genghis Khan.
Diamond told David Wild in He Is…I Say: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Neil Diamond: “It was kind of esoteric, especially at that time. But it’s just me trying to say something a little different, just try and jog something in a person’s memory, or to elicit a reaction. That’s what my job is, to do something a little bit different, and yet something that’s me and something that’s you.”
It has a catchy tune and there’s something about the way he sings it that makes it so touching. As far as his songs go, it’s almost always a global hit and this one is no exception. Watching him sing this one live is magical!
