In a recent interview with WGN News, veteran rock drummer Tommy Clufetos pushed back against the long-standing stereotype of excess in rock music. Despite his wild onstage persona, Clufetos revealed that he has never indulged in drugs or alcohol—choices that have defined much of the genre’s darker history.
“I know I look like a nutcase, but I’m about the straightest guy you’ve ever seen in your life,” he said. “I never did drugs, I don’t drink, and I just play rock and roll like a guy who did — wild and crazy.”
Rather than relying on substances, Clufetos credits his intensity to something more instinctive. “I always thought that the wildness came from your gut. And it does come from your gut with me.” His approach reflects a belief that authenticity—not excess—is what fuels a compelling performance.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
Best known for his long association with Ozzy Osbourne, Clufetos spent more than a decade performing in both Ozzy’s solo band and as a touring drummer for Black Sabbath, stepping in for Bill Ward.
When it comes to playing classic material, Clufetos avoids imitation. “Hopefully not [the same way the previous guy played them] because he’s gone,” he explained. Instead, he strives to respect the original recordings while injecting his own personality.
“I always try to take it back to its original incarnation that people love, and I do my thing through doing that. I bring my own energy to it.”
His résumé also includes work with Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, and Rob Zombie—a testament to both his adaptability and reputation as a powerhouse drummer.
Built in Detroit, Driven by Passion
Clufetos’s musical foundation was forged in Detroit, where relentless gigging shaped both his technique and mindset. Reflecting on his early ambitions, he said:
“I didn’t get into drums to play at the corner bar… I had the biggest aspirations. I still do, and that’s where my fire comes from.”
That determination continues to define his outlook. “They say, ‘Well, you can’t play in every band.’ And I go, ‘Why not?’” he said, emphasizing his belief in limitless potential.
Today, Clufetos channels that same drive into his project, Tommy’s RockTrip, carrying forward the grit and discipline he developed in Detroit’s club circuit. His philosophy remains rooted in consistency and conviction: every performance is approached with the same intensity, whether in a small venue or on a global stage.
“I’m gonna play just like I was playing… like everybody’s watching, because everybody always is watching.”
For Clufetos, the essence of rock ’n’ roll lies not in spectacle alone, but in the relentless pursuit of authenticity. “It’s not about being a used car salesman, but it’s about having a passion for what you do… I can’t help but let it out.” That passion, shaped by years of struggle and sharpened through experience, continues to define his career—proving that longevity in rock is not built on excess, but on discipline, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the music itself.
