The Only Album To Sell Over 6 Million Units
Wow – when Brian May said that he and his bandmates Roger Taylor and John Deacon woke up to great news, they weren’t kidding! This week saw Queen receive word that 35 years after the release of their critically acclaimed Greatest Hits album, the Official Charts tally declared that the album was the highest selling album in the history of the UK with a whopping 6.1 million units sold, making it the first album to cross the 6 million threshold. An amazing achievement for any band but especially for a band of Queen’s caliber, it’s one that came with a lot of blood, sweat and tears; Queen’s Greatest Hits album spent 4 weeks at Billboard’s U.K. Albums Chart’s #1 slot and dominated the Top 40 with a 158 week run.
No wonder Brian May was so absolutely overjoyed when the news came in!
“What a great bit of news to wake up to! The most popular album? Well, I always thought the band showed promise, but this is beyond our boyhood dreams! Thanks folks!” exclaimed guitarist Brian May
We’ve never missed Freddie Mercury more than when Queen’s got something to celebrate, and this is a tremendous reason to celebrate! Sure, his bandmates are elated to be rewarded for such a tremendous achievement – after all, it’s not every day that your album becomes known as the highest selling album in the country more than 3 decades after its release – but the fact that Freddie isn’t here in person to witness the result of hard work and pure passion is enough to make anyone more than a little wistful. However, we know that the “Bohemian Rhapsody” singer is with his bandmates in spirit and celebrating the occasion wherever he is. Congratulations to Queen on a job well done!
