The Secret Eagles Album Controversy Fans Still Talk About

By the mid-1970s, the Eagles were one of the most successful acts in popular music—and that success came with consequences. Between 1972 and 1975, the band enjoyed a meteoric rise, scoring eight Top 40 singles and back-to-back No. 1 hits with “Best of My Love” and “One of These Nights.” The latter also delivered their first chart-topping album, turning the Eagles into arena-level headliners almost overnight.

But relentless touring and mounting expectations took their toll. Writing new material while on the road proved difficult, and the band began to feel creatively boxed in.

“We always had trouble writing songs on the road,” Don Henley told CBS Sunday Morning in early 2026. “You know, we did better when we were at home and we didn’t have to worry about going on stage and preparing for that. But the Beatles had set the standard of putting out all these albums in succession, and record companies came to expect that of everybody.”

As the Eagles regrouped and looked ahead to their next studio project, outside forces were already shaping the band’s immediate future.

A Label Decision Made Without the Band

With One of These Nights dominating the charts following its June 1975 release, Asylum Records grew impatient. Rather than waiting for a new studio album, the label opted to capitalize on the band’s momentum by assembling a greatest hits collection—one they were contractually entitled to release.

“We were pretty much blindsided by that,” Henley said. “But the record company telling us they were going to do that, which they contractually had the right to do, we didn’t have any way to stop them except just to complain.”

The band’s longtime producer, Bill Szymczyk, was tasked with compiling the album. Unbeknownst to the Eagles at the time, Szymczyk balanced two major projects at once. While the band recorded Hotel California at Criteria Studios in Florida, he spent mornings sequencing and mastering what would become Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975).

“We found out later that he was doing it,” Henley recalled. “In the morning, he was working on the greatest hits album… and then we would show up at three or four o’clock in the afternoon.”

Szymczyk’s behind-the-scenes role proved crucial. “It’s important to sequence songs on an album,” Henley said. “You have to take tempo and key and subject matter into consideration… So he did that.”

A Historic Album—and a Complicated Legacy

Released on Feb. 17, 1976, Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) quickly became a phenomenon. It spent five weeks at No. 1 and has since sold more than 40 million copies, making it the best-selling album in U.S. history. Later that same year, Hotel California was released and went on to become the third-best-selling album of all time.

Despite its success, Henley has long viewed the compilation with mixed feelings. “We hadn’t reached our creative peak yet,” he noted. “Hotel California is not part of the greatest hits album, and it didn’t come out until December of 1976.”

He has also questioned the album’s title. “‘Greatest Hits’ is kind of a misnomer,” Henley said. “It should just be called ‘Their Best Songs,’ because every song on that album was not a greatest hit… but they’re good songs.”

Still, time has softened the band’s resistance. What once felt premature has become a testament to the Eagles’ songwriting durability. The compilation has outlived trends, formats, and generations, serving as a gateway for new listeners while reaffirming the band’s place in American music history.

For Henley, the album’s endurance ultimately reframes the frustration surrounding its creation. The songs were written carefully, often under pressure and exhaustion, yet they have continued to resonate decades later. In that sense, Their Greatest Hits stands not just as a commercial milestone, but as proof that craft, patience, and emotional honesty can outlast even the most complicated circumstances of success.
