Stevie Plays Stubb’s Bar-B-Q, 1977

I always love stumbling across Stevie Ray Vaughan rarities, but this live recording of ‘Something Inside’ written by Mike Kindred is my favorite by far! In 1977, Stevie performed this with his then-band Triple Threat Revue at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q in Lubbock, Texas and let me tell you, it’s worth a listen. ‘Something Inside’ has a really amazing pop infused blues feel to it, it’s easy to listen to and lose yourself in, and it’s easy to understand why it didn’t call for Stevie’s usual brand of intensity.

The Story Of Stevie And Stubb’s BBQ

SRV first met Stubb when he was in his late teens. He would regularly play at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q joint in Lubbock. Stories abound about SRV regularly blowing his earnings, stranding himself in Lubbock and Stubb would always empty his cash register and give all that he had to SRV so the kid could get back home to Austin.

This is such a great glimpse into young Stevie’s career when it was just starting; it’s so easy to forget that before MTV and dueling guitars with Jeff Beck, Stevie was just a kid who really loved playing the blues on his guitar – and happened to be amazing at it!
