Victoria Mary Clarke has shared her reaction after Bruce Springsteen recorded a tribute to her late husband, Shane MacGowan, the legendary frontman of The Pogues. The new recording, a cover of the band’s beloved song “A Rainy Night in Soho,” will be released this Thursday as a musical tribute honoring MacGowan’s songwriting and lasting influence.
MacGowan, who died in November 2023 at the age of 65, was widely respected for blending Irish folk traditions with punk energy. His lyrics often explored love, loss, and memory, helping shape The Pogues’ identity and earning admiration from musicians across generations. Springsteen’s decision to revisit one of MacGowan’s most cherished songs highlights the deep respect between the two artists.
A Personal Announcement From Victoria Mary Clarke
The news of the tribute was first shared by Clarke on social media, where she expressed gratitude for Springsteen’s gesture. She described the recording as both emotional and meaningful, especially given the friendship the musicians shared before MacGowan’s death.
She said: “Our very good friend Bruce has recorded a beautiful version of ‘A Rainy Night in Soho’. It’s a stunning tribute to Shane’s songwriting and it’s out on Thursday.”
The song originally appeared on The Pogues’ 1986 album Poguetry in Motion and later became one of the band’s most loved tracks. Known for its reflective tone and heartfelt lyrics, the song has remained a favorite among fans for decades. Springsteen’s interpretation is expected to introduce the track to new audiences while honoring its original spirit.

Friendship and Final Meetings
Springsteen and MacGowan developed a friendship over the years, bonded by mutual respect for songwriting and storytelling. During the Irish leg of his tour in May 2023, Springsteen visited MacGowan at his home in south Dublin while the singer was seriously ill. The visit reflected the personal connection between the two artists beyond their public careers.
After MacGowan’s death, Springsteen released a heartfelt statement expressing his grief and admiration. He described the Irish musician as one of the finest writers he had known.
“Over here on E Street, we are heartbroken over the death of Shane MacGowan. Shane was one of my all-time favourite writers,” Bruce said.
He continued: “The passion and deep intensity of his music and lyrics is unmatched by all but the very best in the rock and roll canon.”
Remembering a Lasting Musical Legacy
Springsteen also reflected on seeing MacGowan shortly before his passing, recalling the strength the singer showed despite declining health. His words highlighted how MacGowan’s presence remained powerful even during difficult moments.
“He was very ill, but still beautifully present in his heart and spirit. His music is timeless and eternal. I don’t know about the rest of us, but they’ll be singing Shane’s songs 100 years from now.”
Clarke’s announcement comes shortly after she revealed that a tribute album dedicated to MacGowan is also planned for release later this year. The upcoming project aims to celebrate his body of work and the wide influence his music continues to hold within rock and folk communities.
