This Might Surprise You

Even the most revered singers on the planet have their fair share of hits and misses. Take Robert Plant, for example. He’s a rock god, a legend. He is widely known as one of the greatest frontmen and vocalists of all time and so imagine our surprise when he shared the story of this awful song that he recorded.

Somehow, we thought he can do no wrong – at least, when it came to vocal performances. Besides, how many can manage to hit high notes with ease and look effortless doing it? But yes, it actually happened. Don’t worry though, he had a good laugh about it.

He shared in his Digging Deep podcast:

“Yeah, so I wrote this piece called Too Loud and it’s just about the El Topo aspects of our game, you know. It’s very funny, it’s a funny song, it’s supposed to be funny.

“Just very, very, very, funny. So the record label said: “What are we supposed to do with this?”. I said: “Play it and let’s get some reaction.” America, back in those days people used to phone in and said ‘hey, play [that song] again’, I like that.” Calls were very important, that’s a very important aspect of floating a new collection of songs. Sadly though, the calls that came into WXRT in Chicago were: “get that shit off the [air], who is that, what the hell is that?? Who is he trying to be?!” That was a real great moment for me because they would send me all the responses typed out. I was very proud, I thought that was another great moment, for the man who wouldn’t be king.”

Can you imagine the great Robert Plant reading those messages and just laughing? That’s quite a sight to see. Because honestly, we never thought Robert Plant and “awful song” would ever be used in one sentence but here we are. At least, he’s so cool about it!
