RIP Jerry Stiller

Comedian and actor Jerry Stiller passed away from natural causes on May 11, 2020 barely a month before his 93rd birthday. Aside from being the half of comedy duo Stiller and Meara, he experienced a career resurgence after landing the part of George Costanza’s father Frank on the American sitcom Seinfield. After Seinfield, he played the role of Arthur Spooner on the CBS series The King of Queens.

In between shooting for the comedy TV show, Stiller managed to squeeze in filming a short segment for Rush’s R30: 30th Anniversary Tour. It was created by Fadoo Productions’ Dale Heslip and Allan Weinrib. You can check it out below.

Canadian Music Scene wrote about the sequence: “R30 kind of started the whole thing with the animated opening. Geddy liked it and stuff but thought it was too serious, and he came up with this idea to have someone wake up out of a dream. The first concept was actually to have a stoner wake up and say, ‘Hey, man, what was that!'”

Alex Lifeson said, “We had a few people in mind, and Jerry was very interested in doing it, and he’s a real pro. And it was just such a cool idea to have George Costanza’s father introducing the band, you know? So he was a really, really good sport, and I think he did a great job. [We] get a lot of laughs out of that.”

It was such a hit that Rush brought it back for their Snakes & Arrows Tour. The band also took to social media to offer their condolences.
