A Return 45 Years In The Making
45 years ago, Pink Floyd performed the biggest – and emptiest – concert of their career. 45 years later, guitarist David Gilmour is about to repeat history, but this time with a full audience.
Currently on a world tour in support of his 2015 album Rattle That Lock, David Gilmour is returning to Pompeii for the first time in 45 years for a two night engagement at the Pompeii Amphitheatre, the site of Pink Floyd’s iconic 1971 concert that spawned one of the most successful concert films to date.
The happy news was broken today by Italy’s culture minister Dario Franceschini via Twitter:
Accordo raggiunto.Dopo 45anni David #Gilmour tornerà a suonare a #Pompei il 7 e l’8 luglio #PinkFloyd #LiveAtPompeii pic.twitter.com/rx3HLXJobI

“Agreement reached. After 45 years David Gilmour will play again at Pompeii on 7 and 8 July.”
Pink Floyd famously played to the empty stone amphitheatre over the course of four days in October 1971 to film critically acclaimed Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii, an adventure that tested the resilience of the band as well as the technology of the early 1970’s against the world’s oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre.
Gilmour’s return to Pompeii is one of the most exciting parts of his Rattle That Lock World Tour, and lucky for us we’ve actually got the opportunity to see it this time!
