It Was A Difficult Time For Him

Paul McCartney recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert where he talked about a variety of topics including how his mother affected him and his music years after her death. He was just 14 years old when she died from embolism following surgery. He once claimed that he dreamt of her in the midst of tension with The Beatles and that particular dream inspired him to write Let It Be.

But as he revealed to Stephen Colbert, his mother Mary McCartney, apparently was the inspiration of another Beatles classic – Yesterday. It wasn’t easy losing his mom but meeting John Lennon and focusing on music helped him.

He said, “I never thought it affected my music until years later. People were saying, ‘Well that song, “Yesterday” ‘… ‘Why she had to go, I don’t know, she wouldn’t say?’ They said, ‘That’s your mom.’ I said, ‘I don’t know.’ I certainly didn’t mean it to be. But it could be. Those things can happen.”

Colbert also asked the 77-year old rock legend about the romantic comedy film that just came out titled Yesterday. It’s a movie about a world where The Beatles didn’t exist and no one knows about their music except one struggling singer-songwriter. Paul decided not to attend the official screening and instead, he and his wife just snuck into the cinema to watch.
