English rock band Mott the Hoople just canceled their upcoming fall tour after their 80-year old lead singer and guitarist Ian Hunter “recently developed a severe case of tinnitus and has been advised by his doctors to discontinue performing until this condition subsides.” The tour reunited Hunter with keyboardist Morgan Fischer and guitarist Ariel Bender and it was supposed to kick off on October 21 at New York’s Capitol Theatre and wrap up on November 6 at The Moore Theatre in Seattle.

The band finished the first leg of their American Tour a few months ago – a handful of dates that found several fans flying to another city to watch their gig. It’s their first outing in the US after over four decades. It was successful enough that the band added 11 dates.

In a message on their Facebook page, Hunter wrote that he’s “had it on and off for years, but it’s always slid away. This time it’s stayed – it knocks the stuffing and the confidence out of you.”

As to the future of Mott the Hoople and Hunter, he added, “Where do we go from here – I’ve no idea kids. I’m just hoping it gets fed up with me eventually!! Don’t feel sorry for me – it’s been a great run if, indeed, it stays with me, and I have to stop now. Maybe it will sod off at some point – I just don’t know.”

Tickets purchased will be refunded.
