The thrash metal masterpiece of 1986’s Peace Sells…but Who’s Buying?, Megadeth’s ‘Peace Sells’ was the band’s response to critics calling them everything from anti-religion to anti-government. It rages at over 4 minutes, and features that iconic galloping bass line from Dave Ellefson that sets the tone for the rest of the song – it really lets you know what you’re about to get yourself into! ‘Peace Sells’ also broached the topic of the fact that everyone’s pushing for peace, yet no one’s really willing to invest in it, be it in money, blood, or pride.
According to former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland, ‘Peace Sells’ was originally conceived as an eight-minute piece before drummer and close friend Gar Samuelson talked the band out of it.
Despite its strong political overtones, ‘Peace Sells’ has been one of Megadeth’s biggest hits and a concert staple ever since its release. In fact, the bass line was even used as the theme for MTV News!
