Jillian Shriner, a bestselling author known as Jillian Lauren and the wife of Scott Shriner, bassist for the rock band Weezer, was shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers on Tuesday. The shooting happened during an incident while LAPD and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were looking for suspects in a different, unrelated crime.

Investigation Leads to Unexpected Encounter

The event took place when police were investigating a hit and run accident that occurred on the 134 freeway near the Figueroa exit. According to the LAPD, three suspects left their car and fled on foot into the Eagle Rock neighborhood in northeast Los Angeles. The suspects split up, making it hard for the officers to catch them.

While searching a backyard for the suspects, police noticed a woman, who was later identified as Shriner, in a neighboring yard holding a handgun. The LAPD claims that she did not listen to multiple orders to drop the gun and instead pointed it at the officers. “Shriner ignored ‘numerous’ orders to drop the gun and instead pointed it at them,” the LAPD said. The officers then opened fire, hitting Shriner in one of her shoulders. After being shot, she ran back into her house. There has been no report that she ever fired at the officers. Also, as of now, there is no independent confirmation of these events.

Aftermath and Witness Statements

Shriner was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was later booked in absentia on charges of attempted murder. LAPD stated that they recovered a 9mm handgun from her home. This shows that Shriner had no involvement in the hit and run accident and lived at the house where the shooting happened.

Eyewitnesses to the search told TheWrap that LAPD and CHP had a heavy presence in the area while searching for the suspects. Many streets and parts of the freeway were blocked off. “There was a large police presence, with streets and portions of the freeway blocked off,” an eyewitness said.

Impact on Scheduled Performance and Ongoing Investigation

The incident happened just days before Weezer’s scheduled performance at the Coachella music festival in Indio, California, during the first weekend of the event. This raised concerns about whether the band’s performance could be affected by the incident.

LAPD representatives didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from TheWrap. They did, however, issue a statement on Wednesday about the hit and run accident. Despite the chaos, the event remains under investigation, leaving many questions unanswered for now.
