Avery Makes A Monster…Drum Solo, That Is
We’ve been following 9-year-old drum sensation Avery Molek’s career for the past year and over time we’ve had the profound pleasure and privilege of watching his evolution as a musician. We’ve seen him tackle Rush’s “Tom Sawyer,” drumming with a broken arm, pulling double duty on vocals, drums and keys – and now, we’re seeing him solo. Earlier this week, Avery recorded himself tackling the much requested “Frankenstein” by legendary band The Edgar Winter Group; a hard rocking, funky sort of tune, “Frankenstein” is one of the most important – and challenging – instrumentals ever composed, and while it’s known for its intricate guitar and keyboard work, it’s the drum solo that stands out the most.
Fun Fact: ‘Frankenstein’ got its name when the song’s original edits had to be cut and spliced by hand, prompting Edgar and his band to joke about literally making their very own Frankenstein monster.
YouTube removed the actual audio track from the video but never fear; Avery not only rocks this drum solo for nearly 4 minutes, he’s so good that after the first few seconds in you don’t even really care! Taking full advantage of his kit, Avery absolutely shines as he holds fast to the song’s title “Frankenstein” by adding his own flair and fills to the Edgar Winter Group classic, experimenting with different sounds and textures for a drum solo that isn’t just your regular, run of the mill drum solo but something musical and wildly creative. If you’re anything like us, you’re bound to be impressed by what he does with this classic – check it out in the video below!
