After 800 weeks on the Billboard 200 list, Journey’s Greatest Hits CD has achieved an amazing milestone. Journey now joins the esteemed ranks of Pink Floyd and Bob Marley, the previous two musicians to accomplish this feat.

Debuting on December 3, 1988, Greatest Hits immediately made waves with its collection of chart-topping classics like “Lights,” “Any Way You Want It,” and “Wheel in the Sky.” The album peaked at No. 10 on February 11, 1989, and its enduring popularity has seen it certified 18 times platinum, a testament to its enduring appeal.

The record was certified for 15 and 18 million copies in sales in January 2024 and 2008, respectively, solidifying the album’s place as a timeless classic. As the album continued to do well, new tracks were added in 2006, including “When You Love a Woman.”

But there were some difficulties along the way for Journey’s Greatest Hits to reach the Billboard 200. Changes in chart eligibility in 1991 caused catalog releases such as this compilation to be marginalized. These limitations weren’t removed until 2009, which gave earlier albums like Journey’s a chance to rise back up the rankings.

Over the years, the Billboard 200 has experienced several changes. It now includes streaming statistics to indicate overall record usage, having previously just looked at pure album sales. The music business has changed as a result of this change, which recognizes the increasing impact of digital platforms on music consumption.

Even though Journey’s accomplishment is noteworthy, there have been others throughout the chart’s history. With 830 weeks on the list, Bob Marley’s “Legend” collection holds the record, closely followed by Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” with 989 weeks. The fact that Metallica and Creedence Clearwater Revival are so high on the list further demonstrates the timeless popularity of classic rock.

The fact that fans are still moved by Journey’s Greatest Hits is evidence of the band’s lasting influence and the everlasting power of their music. Certain songs endure the test of time in a world where musical trends change all the time.
