Johnny Cash 1968 ‘At The Carousel Ballroom’ Set For Release

Arrives On September 24

A previously unreleased Johnny Cash live album titled “At The Carousel Ballroom” is getting its first official release on September 24 via the Owsley “Bear” Stanley Foundation and Renew Records/BMG. The April 24, 1968 show was recorded at Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco by taper and audio engineer Owsley Stanley.

This was recorded mere days before his iconic LP, “Live at Folsom Prison” was released. The track list includes two Bob Dylan covers: “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright” and “One Too Many Mornings”.

“Bear’s recording gives us an entirely different perspective on Johnny’s live sound during this creative peak, and is probably the closest to what it actually sounded like to be in the audience for a Johnny Cash show in 1968,” Stanley’s son, Starfinder Stanley said. “There’s an idiosyncrasy to this recording; on every other Johnny Cash record you’ve ever heard, Johnny is centered in the stereo soundstage.”

“But on this one, Johnny is entirely on the right channel,” he added, “and the Tennessee Three are all on the left. That’s a bit weird until your brain adjusts, but you quickly realize that you’ve been set right between Johnny and his band.”

“At The Carousel Ballroom” will be released on vinyl and CD.
