A Must-Have For Hendrix Fans

Jimi Hendrix’s four historic debut concerts at New York’s Fillmore East with his Band of Gypsys was recently compiled in an expansive 5-CD 8-LP box set. Titled Songs for Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts, the material will be pulled out from the four shows on two unforgettable evenings – New Year’s Eve 1969 and New Year’s Day 1970. This was after Hendrix broke up the Experience. Along with bassist and longtime friend Billy Cox whom he met at the 101st Airborne Division in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky in 1962 and drummer Buddy Miles, they formed together another iconic albeit short-lived trio.

To the delight of the crowd, the first show’s 11-song set featured new tracks while the other three concerts found Hendrix reworking some fan favorites.

Some of the songs and performances already appeared on past albums but this is the first time that the shows are presented in their entirety. The 5-CD box set will be out on November 22 while the 8-vinyl version will follow on December 13.

Newly mixed by engineer Eddie Kramer, the set will feature over two dozen songs that have never been released commercially, unseen photos from Fillmore East house photographer Amalie Rothschild, Jan Blom, and Marshall Amplifier representative Marc Franklin, and liner notes by Cox and another one from the author, journalist and filmmaker Nelson George.
