Most Of Them Are Disappointed
At the 2021 Grammy Awards that took place last March 14, the Recording Academy paid tribute to guitar legend Eddie Van Halen during their ‘In Memoriam’ segment. EVH died in October 2020 at the age of 65 following a lengthy battle with cancer and other health issues. However for fans and fellow rockers alike, they all felt as though the 20-second clip was too short for someone who’s not just an iconic musician but a revolutionary axeslinger as well.
It was an archival footage of EVH playing the Eruption guitar solo and if we’re honest, it’s not enough for a rockstar who left behind a rich legacy in music. Most have taken to social media to voice out their dissatisfaction and displeasure.
Former Van Halen singer Gary Cherone tweeted, “Maybe an Artist that reimagined how one plays an instrument, who continues to influence generations of musicians and, literally changed the course of rock ‘n’ roll deserves more than fifteen second at the Grammys?”

Fozzy vocalist Chris Jericho wrote, “Hey @RecordingAcad …no tribute to @eddievanhalen tonight?… And don’t ever try to give my band a nomination. I’d rather win a @RazzieAwards.”
Hey @RecordingAcad …no tribute to @eddievanhalen tonight? You and your bullshit awards can GO FUCK YOUR ASS!! And don’t ever try to give my band a nomination. I’d rather win a @RazzieAwards… #FuckOffGrammys #Grammys

SiriusXM host Eddie Trunk also reacted by posting the clip on his Instagram with the caption: “So in a more than 3 hour show this is all the @recordingacademy #grammys could muster for an ICON?! I am beyond outraged and disgusted. New lows even by Grammy standards!”

EVH’s son Wolfgang shared that he was asked to play Eruption but he refused because “I don’t think anyone could have lived up to what my father did for music but himself.” But he didn’t expect such brief tribute. He said that he “didn’t realize that they would only show Pop for 15 seconds in the middle of 4 full performances for others we had lost.”
