Gibson has unveiled a limited edition Murphy Lab-aged Custom Shop version of Chuck Berry’s 1978 ES-355 model in wine red. This is in celebration of what would have been the rock ‘n roll pioneer’s 95th birthday.

The ES-355 was Berry’s particular favorite.

“Of all the guitars my dad played, the 1978 ES-355 by far was his go-to,” Berry’s son Charles Berry Jr. said. “The guitar traveled the world with my dad for over 36 years. His last album Chuck and the new live album Chuck Berry: Live From Blueberry Hill were recorded with the Gibson Wine Red ES-355.”

“Chuck Berry was a founding father of rock and roll,” Gibson wrote in a statement. “His stagecraft and musicianship laid the foundation for nearly every genre of rock and popular music. His playing, showmanship, and catalog of music helped launch many musicians’ careers, and countless sidemen shared the stage with him. So did his trusted Gibson guitars.”

The Chuck Berry 1970s ES-355 is limited to 100 units only hand-made by the guitar company’s luthiers and craftspeople and is now available for $6,999. It also comes with a certificate of authenticity. Gibson Custom Shop made certain that every aspect of the guitar is historically correct.
