A Beautiful, Heartwarming Message
In celebration of World Refugee Day this June 20, Game of Thrones star Lena Headey filmed an open letter for Queen frontman and rock icon Freddie Mercury. In this short clip, she paid tribute to the late legend as she said:
“What if the UK never welcomed you in? Without a safe home to find your voice, the world would never hear it and so many would never find their own.Your fearlessness would never embolden us all to be fearless. Your anthems silenced. We would never be champions. Our world without you wouldn’t be as rhapsodic, triumphant or brilliant. It just wouldn’t be our world.”
This poignant message is just one of several other videos released by the International Rescue Committee. Freddie Mercury joins a long line of famous refugees – Albert Einstein, Gloria Estefan, Elie Wiesel, and Marc Chagall to name a few.
Mercury was born in Zanzibar and grew up in India. It was in 1964 when Freddie and his family were forced to flee to England to escape the violence in his town. He studied in Isleworth Polytechnic and later at Ealing Art College.
