Society of Rock
Tommy DeCarlo, the lead vocalist for the legendary rock band Boston, has died at the age of 60. His family shared the news in a heartfelt Facebook post on Monday morning.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our Dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9th, 2026. After being diagnosed with brain cancer last September, he fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end. During this difficult time, we kindly ask that friends and fans respect our family’s privacy as we grieve and support one another. Rest in peace, Dad. With love, Annie, Talia & Tommy Jr.,” the post read.
From Fan to Frontman
DeCarlo had announced in October that he was taking a break from performing due to “some unexpected health issues.” His connection to Boston began in 2007, when he was chosen to join the band following the death of its original singer, Brad Delp. DeCarlo had initially gained recognition for posting tributes to Delp on social media, impressing the band with his vocal talent and devotion to their music.
Once he joined Boston, DeCarlo became the lead voice for their live performances, touring internationally and keeping the band’s signature sound alive. Fans appreciated his ability to honor the original recordings while also bringing his own energy and emotion to each show. His performances on classic hits like “More Than a Feeling” and “Peace of Mind” helped carry the legacy of the band into a new era.
Building His Own Musical Path
In 2012, DeCarlo formed a new band called DECARLO with his son. The group released its first album in 2020, showcasing his continued passion for music and creative exploration. Beyond the stage, he shared his personal story with fans through his 2021 audiobook, Unlikely Rockstar – The Tommy DeCarlo Story, which recounts his life before joining Boston, including his early musical influences and the surprising way he became the band’s frontman.
DeCarlo’s life in music was defined by dedication and a deep connection to the songs and the fans who loved them. While his time with Boston brought him international recognition, his work with DECARLO and his personal reflections in the audiobook gave audiences a closer look at the man behind the voice.
He is remembered not only as a talented singer but also as a devoted father, husband, and performer who faced his final battle with bravery. His family, bandmates, and fans continue to honor his contributions to rock music and the lasting impact of his voice.
