Hey You, Mr. Blue!

Inspired by The Beatles’ masterpiece ‘A Day In The Life,’ Electric Light Orchestra’s feel good hit ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ is the best part of any day. Mastermind Jeff Lynne wrote it in 1977 after spending a dark and misty two weeks sequestered away in a Swiss chalet writing ELO’s Out Of The Blue, celebrating the first sunny day of his trip with a song inspired by the first thing he noticed that day – how blue the sky suddenly was. It’s been called “Beatlesque,” borrowing elements from The Beatles’ ‘Martha My Dear’ and ‘A Day In The Life’ and with its open, bright sound highlighted by heavily vocoded harmonies, it’s a song that still has the power to transform even the darkest of days to something hopeful nearly 40 years later.

Fun Fact: This song closed the side of the album known as ‘Concerto For A Rainy Day.’ The lyrics are uplifting, and follow the concept of a rainy day that comes to an end.

In 2015, ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ saw a resurgence when ELO’s Jeff Lynne and Richard Tandy performed this happy classic with Ed Sheeran at the 2015 Grammy Awards; while ELO has never won a Grammy, their performance with Sheeran provided the most “Shazamed” moment of the entire telecast according to data provided by music discovery app Shazam, introducing ‘Mr. Blue Sky’ to a brand new generation that could use a little sunshine in the form of one of the greatest songs ever written!

+ Mr. Blue Sky lyrics +

Morning! Today’s forecast calls for blue skies.

Sun is shinin’ in the sky,
There ain’t a cloud in sight
It’s stopped rainin’
Everybody’s in a play
And don’t you know
It’s a beautiful new day

Runnin’ down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly
In the city on the streets
Where once was pity
Mister Blue Sky is living here today

Mister Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (So long)
Where did we go wrong?
Mister Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (So long)
Where did we go wrong?

Hey you with the pretty face
Welcome to the human race
A celebration
Mister Blue Sky’s up there waitin’ and today
Is the day we’ve waited for, ah

Oh, Mister Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (So long)
Where did we go wrong?

Hey there, Mister Blue
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around, see what you do
Everybody smiles at you

Hey there, Mister Blue
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around, see what you do
Everybody smiles at you

Mister Blue Sky
Mister Blue Sky
Mister Blue Sky
Mister Blue Sky

Mister Blue, you did it right
But soon comes Mister Night
Creepin’ over
Now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind I’ll remember you this
I’ll remember you this way

Mister Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (So long)
Where did we go wrong?

Hey there, Mister Blue (Sky)
We’re so pleased to be with you (Sky)
Look around see what you do (Blue)
Everybody smiles at you

Please turn me over
