David Crosby has teamed up with Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen for the song “Rodriguez for a Night” which is featured on Crosby’s new album “For Free”, out on July 23. In the past, Crosby was always vocal about his admiration for Fagen’s songwriting but for some reason, they never got around to working together until now.

“I’m so honored he gave us a set of words. I’ve been asking him for a couple of years,” Crosby previously told Rolling Stone, “He started to trust us, I think. It took a long time, but he gave us a set of words that are really wonderful and we just wrote the shit out of them.”

Most of the songs on the album were written by Crosby and his son and bandmate James Raymond.

“Can you imagine what it’s like to connect with your son and find out that he’s incredibly talented — a great composer, a great poet and a really fine songwriter and musician all around?” the rock legend said in a statement. “We’re such good friends and we work so well together, and we’ll each go to any length to create the highest-quality songs we can.”

“One thing James and I both believe is that songs are an art form and a treasure,” he added, “so when a song comes along that’s as good as that one, we’ll just give it everything we got.”
