Ground Control To Major Tom…

It’s impossible to talk about late music legend David Bowie without mentioning Ziggy Stardust, the persona he briefly adopted in the early seventies. You know the one – bright red hair paired with glittery, cosmic looking makeup and psychedelic space suits that looked like something out of a science fiction movie. While the Ziggy Stardust era of Bowie’s life was undeniably the most aesthetically groundbreaking period of his career, it was also a hugely creative time for him musically; after all, 1973 yielded the critically acclaimed Aladdin Sane and several theatrical floor shows starring Bowie as Ziggy Stardust with backing band, The Spiders From Mars.

Taken from his final floor show as Ziggy Stardust, this 1973 footage of Bowie performing “Space Oddity” at London’s Marquee Club seems oddly perfect, especially given that just after his death, we’re struggling to come to terms with the loss of a man whose legacy is tied to a persona left behind decades ago.

Fun Fact: Shortly after his death in 2016, David Bowie was immortalized in the stars with a lightning bolt constellation named after his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust.

Clad in a green and orange space suit and toting an acoustic guitar, David Bowie is otherworldly as he tells the story of Major Tom in a way that’s both terribly beautiful and more than a little haunting; the spotlight set on Bowie and guitarist Mick Ronson makes the stage feel small and intimate, much like the spaceship that housed the fictional “Space Oddity” character. David spent a lifetime of trying to separate David Jones from David Bowie from Ziggy Stardust – but in this moment, it’s fitting that the two are together again and in the place we loved them most: onstage.
