Dave Grohl made a surprise return to the stage on Saturday night at Coachella—but this time, it wasn’t with the Foo Fighters or Nirvana. Instead, he teamed up with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a powerful, genre-blending performance that caught the crowd completely off guard.
Backed by the LA Phil, Grohl performed two fan-favorite Foo Fighters songs: “The Sky Is a Neighborhood” and “Everlong.” The unexpected pairing created a breathtaking fusion of rock and classical that left the Coachella audience in awe.
A Long-Awaited Return
This Coachella performance marked the first time Grohl has played Foo Fighters songs live since August 2024. Earlier this year, he did take the stage at FireAid in January, reuniting with the surviving members of Nirvana—just months after confirming he had fathered a child out of wedlock.
Right now, the Foo Fighters don’t have any upcoming tour dates on the calendar, which made Saturday night’s set feel even more special for fans who’ve missed seeing Grohl in his rock element.
Gustavo Dudamel’s Coachella Dream Comes True
The man behind the orchestral magic, LA Phil conductor Gustavo Dudamel, called the night a dream come true. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Dudamel said:
“I think we were always waiting to see who would take the steps to say, ‘Let’s do this.’”
He continued:
“It’s wonderful because of all the work that we have done at the Hollywood Bowl, playing every summer with so many artists with different styles. I think the road took us to this moment, to celebrate all of these years in such an iconic place where classical music is not usually part of the message.”
A Night of Surprises
Grohl wasn’t the only surprise of the evening. Later in the night, actress and singer Cynthia Erivo delivered a stunning cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain,” adding another memorable moment to an already unforgettable show.
