Gregg Foreman, the former frontman of The Delta 72 and a longtime collaborator with Cat Power, has died at the age of 53.

According to records from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, viewed by Far Out, Foreman was found at his home in Los Angeles on April 21. No cause of death has been disclosed at the time of writing.

Tributes from Peers and Collaborators

Musician Wesley Eisold, known for his work as Cold Cave, confirmed the news in an Instagram post on April 21, reflecting on his long history with Foreman.

“I guess the word is out. First met Gregg in the year 2000 and reconnected when I moved to LA. He introduced me to Amy shortly after and the rest is history.”

Eisold continued with a more personal remembrance:

“Like others, he bounced in and out of our lives and changed each one he visited. For better or for worse, he lived a life that others only claim to have lived and he was one of one. His love for music was as genuine as the pain he harbored. Wishing you peace Gregg, for all of eternity, heavenly sounds and cosmic rhythms.”

Actor Michael Imperioli also paid tribute, writing, “Very very sad to hear that the great GREGG FOREMAN has passed away. Gregg was a fantastic musician, and a deeply soulful artist.” He added, “I was fortunate enough to be with him on Lydia Lunch’s Verbal Burlesque crew….and his humility, sincerity and kindness made a big impression on me. Much love to his family, friends and collaborators.”

Matador Records, the former label home of Cat Power, shared its condolences, posting:

“Deepest condolences to all friends, family and bandmates of Gregg Foreman.”

From Philadelphia Roots to Indie Rock Recognition

Born in Philadelphia in 1972, Foreman emerged as a key figure in the 1990s indie rock scene as the frontman of The Delta 72. The band released three albums before disbanding in 2001, earning a reputation for its raw, garage-infused sound.

Following the group’s split, Foreman went on to build a lasting creative partnership with Cat Power, contributing to her work for more than two decades and becoming a vital presence in her evolving musical landscape.

A Career of Wide-Ranging Collaborations

Beyond his work with Cat Power, Foreman collaborated with James Williamson on the 2015 album Re-Licked, appearing alongside artists such as Alison Mosshart and Bobby Gillespie.

As a keyboardist, he also spent two separate stints touring with The Gossip during the 2010s. His collaborative reach extended further to work with Alan Vega and Kat Von D, underscoring a career marked by versatility and a deep connection to the alternative music community.
