Dixie Dregs was formed in 1970 by Steve Morse and Andy West. They originally called themselves Dixie Grit but they disbanded in 1971. Morse and West continued to perform and renamed the group as Dixie Dregs. They’re one of the greatest jazz-rock bands of all time but it’s disappointing that so many still haven’t heard about them or their music.

West told Kevin Johnson in a 2018 interview, “A lot of the music, a lot of the compositions that Steve wrote during that time are in my mind timeless. You know he actually captured a kind of thing that is just pure music in his purest and most perfect intent. It’s not about a cultural moment in time. It’s about a musical sentiment expressed by these people and by this composer. And so given that whenever it’s played it’s okay because you know what? There’s no context to it other than the music.”

They were known for fusing elements of rock, jazz, country, and classical music. Here are their five best songs.

5. Odyssey

It’s seven minutes of epic music.

4. Cruise Control

This straightforward rocker became a staple n their live repertoire.

3. What If

That solo is just everything.

2. Ice Cakes

Another track that showcased their virtuosity.

1. Take It Off The Top

An uptempo rock number that deserves more appreciation.
