On April 18, 2024, Dickey Betts, a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, died at his home in Osprey, Florida, at the age of 80. His family confirmed that the cause of death was cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born Forrest Richard Betts on December 12, 1943, in West Palm Beach, Florida, he grew up in Bradenton. Betts began playing instruments like the ukulele, banjo, and mandolin before focusing on the guitar. In 1967, he formed the band Second Coming with bassist Berry Oakley, which eventually led to the formation of the Allman Brothers Band with Duane and Gregg Allman.
The Allman Brothers Band became known for their blend of rock, blues, country, and jazz, helping to define the Southern rock genre. Betts played a significant role in shaping the band’s sound, especially after the death of Duane Allman in 1971. He took on lead guitar duties and contributed vocals, writing some of the band’s most iconic songs.

Signature Songs and Achievements
Betts wrote and sang on “Ramblin’ Man,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. He also composed the instrumental “Jessica,” which won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1996. In 1995, Betts and the Allman Brothers Band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
After being dismissed from the Allman Brothers Band in 2000 due to internal conflicts, Betts continued to perform with his own group, Great Southern. He remained active in music until his retirement in 2021. Betts is survived by his wife, Donna, and their children Kimberly, Christy, Jessica, and Duane.

Following his passing, former bandmates and fans paid tribute to Betts. The Allman Brothers Band’s official statement read, “You will be forever remembered.” His contributions to music, especially in defining the Southern rock sound, continue to influence artists and resonate with fans worldwide .
