Classic rock bands often faced internal conflicts that led to breakups. Yet, many found ways to reunite and continue making music.
Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac experienced several internal disputes. In 1973, guitarist Bob Weston had an affair with drummer Mick Fleetwood’s wife, leading to Weston’s dismissal and tour cancellations. In 1987, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham left after disagreements over the band’s direction. Despite these issues, the band reunited multiple times, including a notable reunion in 1997.
The Byrds
The Byrds faced internal tensions that led to multiple lineup changes. In 1966, Gene Clark left due to anxiety and isolation. By 1968, David Crosby and Michael Clarke also departed. Despite these challenges, the original lineup reunited briefly in 1973 and performed together again in 1991 during their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
Cream
Cream’s members had conflicting personalities. Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce often clashed, and Eric Clapton felt the band’s performances lacked cohesion. They disbanded in 1968 but reunited for a series of concerts in 2005.
The Kinks
Brothers Ray and Dave Davies of The Kinks had a tumultuous relationship. Their constant arguments led to the band’s breakup in 1997. However, they announced plans to reunite in 2018.
Guns N’ Roses
Guns N’ Roses faced internal conflicts, particularly between Axl Rose and Slash. Their disagreements led to Slash’s departure in 1996. After years apart, they reunited in 2016 for the “Not in This Lifetime… Tour.”
Aerosmith
Aerosmith dealt with various conflicts over the years, resulting in members leaving and rejoining. Despite these challenges, the band managed to reunite and continue performing together.
Eagles
The Eagles experienced tensions, notably between Don Felder and Don Henley. Their disagreements led to the band’s breakup in 1980. They reunited in 1994 but faced further conflicts, resulting in Felder’s dismissal in 2001.
