Todd Rundgren appeared on The Midnight Special – the episode aired on February 8, 1974 and he was introduced by no less than Tina Turner. This vintage footage is resurfacing now because these two artists are part of The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2021 inductees. Tina Turner was previously inducted with Ike Turner back in 1991. Provigil
Rundgren powered through two songs – “Couldn’t I Just Tell You” and “A Dream Goes on Forever”.
Tina Turner introduced him by saying, “I’m always having problems pronouncing names a lot of times. I did the Grammy awards, had all this long list of names.” She explained, “I had really panicked, so I just really goofed the names. So I know I’m gonna goof this one, but I’m gonna try it anyway. Let’s give Rodd Thundgren — Todd Rundgren — a big round of applause!”
“Couldn’t I Just Tell You” was first released on Rundgren’s 1972 album Something/Anything?. It became integral to the development of power pop even though it only peaked at #93 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Rundgren said, “I was pretty happy with the song, because I realized it was the kind of thing I would probably have done more of if I had been using other players.”
