A New Voice in San Francisco

On June 4, 1966, Janis Joplin arrived in San Francisco to join Big Brother and the Holding Company. Just six days later, on June 10, she made her debut with the band at the Avalon Ballroom. This performance marked the beginning of her rise in the music scene.

Big Brother and the Holding Company, formed in 1965, had been seeking a strong vocalist to complement their psychedelic rock style. Joplin’s powerful blues-influenced voice brought a new dimension to the band’s sound. Their collaboration quickly gained attention, especially after their performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.

Climbing the Chart

In 1967, the band released their self-titled debut album, which reached #60 on the Billboard charts. The following year, they released “Cheap Thrills,” which became a significant success. The album featured the song “Piece of My Heart,” which climbed to #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968.

“Piece of My Heart” showcased Joplin’s emotive singing style and became one of the band’s most recognized songs. The success of “Cheap Thrills” solidified Big Brother and the Holding Company’s place in rock history.
