You Won’t Believe How Different Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” Demo Sounds!- It’s Amazing

I Can Still Hear You Sayin…
Although we are completely obsessed with the studio/ live version of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” it is no surprise that Stevie’s original pitch to the band was anything less than hauntingly stunning with a single guitar behind her.
“And if, you don’t love me now, you will never love me again….”
The first time we heard this, we were completely shocked! With Stevie’s eerie improv verses before the recognizable lyrics in the released version, we were almost certain it was a completely different song. It turns out that these lyrics are pieces of Christine’s “Butter Cookie (Keep Me There)” and other bits of songs from different members of the band.
Interesting Fact: Stevie Nicks wrote the lyrics about Lindsey Buckingham as their relationship was falling apart. Buckingham and Nicks share lead vocals on the song.
Originally this was recorded in 1977, a decade after the band took off- but the timeless and effortless beauty of these enchanting lyrics sticks with you even after the song’s end, only Stevie could have that type of lasting effect on us…
+ The Chain (Demo) Lyrics +
Slipped into the fountains of my emptiness I let tear-drops fall, I let 'em go Stepped into the canyons of my loneliness And I went about as far as I could go Even as I searched for you, I knew Even if I found you you'd be so cold Even when I found you now baby I knew That I had gone about as far as I could go And if you don't love me now You will never love me again I can still hear you saying You would never break the chain I can still hear you saying That if you don't love me now Oh, you won't love me again I don't mean to beg But I don't know what else to say If you meant what you said You'd have been here yesterday I won't watch you go I won't even try There you go down the road But don't look to me to say goodbye And if you don't love me now You will never love me again I can still hear you saying You would never break the chain I can still hear you saying You would never break the chain And if you don't love me now Oh, you won't love me again You won't love me again You won't love me again
