Why Def Leppard Fans Are Celebrating Right Now

Def Leppard have returned with a new standalone single, “Rejoice,” a high-energy release timed to coincide with the band’s upcoming Las Vegas residency. The shows begin Feb. 3 at Caesars Palace, with the song serving as both a celebration and a statement of intent from the veteran rockers.
A Song Built From the Ground Up
According to singer Joe Elliott, “Rejoice” emerged from a clear emotional concept. “This song’s been an amazing journey from concept to conclusion,” Elliott said in a press release. “I said to [guitarist] Phil [Collen] one day, ‘I’ve got this idea for a lyric where the narrator is at absolute rock bottom and wants to rise up to a higher level. Do you have a musical piece that might match with that?’ And he said, ‘As it happens, yes I do.’”
Collen explained that he already had the foundation of the song in place when Elliott approached him. “I had this riff, this idea for a song a while ago actually, so when Joe came to me I created this drum loop based with a tribal sound and it fit perfectly with this other arrangement I had,” he said. “I sent it to Joe and it was like magic – he sang straight over the top of it. And that’s how the song was formed.”
A Harder Edge for a Veteran Band
As the track evolved, producer Ronan McHugh helped refine the rhythmic elements, giving the song a more expansive, chant-like feel. “Then we gave it to Ronan [McHugh] who’d done a proper drum loop with different sounds,” Collen added. “It all started gelling and just sounded like a powerful chant. We love it. It’s hard rock for us. It’s got a bit more of an ‘oomph’ than stuff we’ve been doing for a while. It’s kind of magical.”
Recent Releases and the Road Ahead
“Rejoice” follows Def Leppard’s January 2025 cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me,” released to benefit victims of the Southern California wildfires. Their most recent original song prior to that was 2024’s “Just Like ’73,” recorded with Tom Morello. The band’s last studio album, Diamond Star Halos, arrived in 2022, with a live companion, Diamond Star Heroes: Live From Sheffield, slated for 2025.
Beyond Las Vegas, Def Leppard are preparing for an extensive year of touring, including dates in India this March and a European run in the summer. Discussing the residency, Elliott noted the challenge of balancing expectations. “We’re going to dig a little deeper in the set,” he said, explaining the need to satisfy both casual Vegas audiences and longtime fans eager for deeper cuts.
